Sigh, just my luck. Follow up to Ideas, ideas, ideas

by Alan Hoskins on January 28, 2009

What a bummer.

A few months ago I wrote a post entitled “Ideas, ideas, ideas” where I talked about how I always have these ideas, but never really act on them. Well the big idea I talked about at the end of the post, I have learned recently, already out there and being worked on. =/ Here I was thinking I had an original idea, but there are always someone 10 steps ahead of me.

So now that it is out there I can say what it was/is. I had the idea for a site for gamers to be able to share gaming moments and achievements with their friends. It was going to be something like Twitter and would notify, view sort updates, your friends on what achievements you received as you received them. Along with that you could use it straight up like normal Twitter just to say what you were up to. Sounds interesting? Well check out Raptr.com. Oh well.

I guess I could still work on my idea, since there are some features I think would be great to see in something like this. Plus competition is always nice, but they have the people and money (through funding they received) to do what they are doing now. On the other hand I could send in those ideas and maybe see them show up one day.

Such is life. One day I will do something. Something I enjoy and hopefully so will others.

Geeks Radio – Music for your inner Geek

by Alan Hoskins on January 28, 2009

Recently I have discovered a new internet radio station designed for Geeks, or anyone, to listen to while doing their normal daily business. Geeks Radio, as it is called, was recently started by a group of people, who met through Geeks.Pirillo.com and live.pirillo.com, and is quickly growing.

I have found myself on their page listening more than a few times and I have to say I’ve enjoyed what I’ve heard. They allow each DJ to play whatever they like, to a certain extent, without sticking to one genre. This is something I enjoy because when I listen to music I like to hear a bit of everything. I like everything from rap/hiphop (which I haven’t heard yet on Geeks) to country and even classical.

Not only do they offer music, but they also have talk radio. From variety shows to shows taking about technology, Geeks Radio has a bit of everything you would want in a radio station. To sweeten the deal they even currently have a contest going on for someone to win a MSI Wind Netbook daybreakers full movie .

As stated, Geeks Radio is quickly growing and has already developed a toolbar for easy listening as well as Windows widget for use in Vista/Windows 7. If you ever find yourself browsing around the internet and need something to listen to, stop by GeeksRadio.fm and listen live.

Parental Control on the Internet… HELP!

by Alan Hoskins on December 15, 2008

Ratings

So Christmas is in less then 2 weeks and I have to start thinking about internet security for minors. See for my 7 year old’s Christmas present, his mother and I have got together and bought him a new laptop. He loves using mine, but I think it is time he has his own so he can play when he wants. There in lies the problem.

I don’t have the first clue of blocking access to ALL sites that he shouldn’t be visiting. I know I can block certain sites, but I can assure you I don’t know the name of every site out there that is not child friendly. Does anyone know any hints as to what to use to block mature content. He is very bright and curious so sometimes he goes on a tangent searching and sometimes “bad” sites show up under legit search results.

Please help if you can. I will be setting the laptop up near mine so I can monitor him, but I still want to be safe just in case he happens to be on when I am not right there with him. Parenting gets scary as the kids get older!

Ugh, Migraines!

by Alan Hoskins on December 10, 2008

For the last two days, not today thank god, I have had a migraine plus what I like to call an “eye”graine. My whole right side of my face, from my eye to my ear, was hurting on Monday. On Tuesday it was my left side of my face. The pain feels like something is just digging into my brain and eyeballs trying to force it out of my head. It is just so unbearable that I try to just lay in bed and let it go away. I also tak migraine pain relievers, which didn’t help this time, but eventually they both did go away.

That brings me to today, migraine free and happy. Whenever I get a migraine it makes me think of the days cherish the days I don’t have one. I have a feeling that it was my contacts that have lead to these last few. My glasses broke about a month or two ago and since I have only been wearing my contacts. After Monday and Tuesday though I will be making me an eye doctor’s appointment and getting in ASAP.

Does anyone know any remedies for migraines when you get them? I am almost to the point where any kind of pain reliever doesn’t help. Is there a doctor prescribed medicine to prevent or lessen a migraine? I would be so happy to never have another one in my lifetime. I also pray my son never gets them.

Ideas, ideas, ideas

by Alan Hoskins on November 28, 2008

At most times throughout the day I have ideas running through my head. Most, if not all, are ideas for what I could do that would be fun and profitable. I want to make a website or some business that I can work on constantly. Updating and changing it to make it better it because that is fun to me. I have one right now in my mind that I think would become useful to thousands of people out there.

The problem? Well as with most of my ideas, this one requires a larger knowledge of programming than I have. I really have none at all other than what I’ve learned through fooling around with Wordpress, Joomla, Drupal, etc. Also I want to do as much of it on my own as I can and not be reliant on others too much. I would love to be able to hire someone to write the code, but I have no idea how much it would cost. I am scared I’d hire someone than a week or two later they would comeback with a bill for a couple thousand, which I cannot afford.

So for now I’ve been working on eloborating this current idea on paper. I am trying to map out every detail I can think of. I am going to see if my brother could help draw some background graphics that I plan to use. I guess I will also be saving up to one day, hopefully soon, hire the programmer I need to get me started.
